Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 9, 2026
Excerp ("we", "our", "the app") is a mobile app that lets you swipe through short cards summarizing technology and AI news, save articles to a reading list on your phone, take short quizzes to earn a Verified badge, and see a leaderboard of verified readers. This policy explains what information we collect, where it is kept, and how you can have it deleted.
Information we keep on our server
- Sign-in information: when you sign in with Google, Google gives the app a sign-in token and the app sends it to our server. We use it only to confirm your email address. We keep that email address, and a sign-in session (a secret code, stored in scrambled form) so you stay signed in. We do not store or use your name or profile photo from Google. If access to the app is limited to approved accounts, we also keep the email addresses on the approved list and of people who signed in and asked for access.
- Leaderboard information: when you pass a quiz, the app sends our server a random number made for your device, the name you chose for the leaderboard (the name in your profile, or "Reader" if you have not set one), and which article you verified and when. The leaderboard shows your name and your number of verified articles to other users of the app. The app also sends the random number when you open the leaderboard, to find your place, but we store it only when you pass a quiz.
- Technical information: our server sees your IP address when your phone connects. We use it only to deliver the service and to limit abuse, we hold it briefly in the server's memory, and we do not write it to logs.
Information that stays on your phone
Your profile (name, industry and topics), your reading list, the articles you save or skip, your quiz progress and Verified badges, and any inbox messages you write are stored only on your phone. We never receive them, and we never see your quiz answers or scores. Deleting the app or clearing its data removes them.
The app itself contains no advertising, analytics or crash-reporting tools.
How we use this information
- To sign you in and keep you signed in.
- To run the leaderboard and show it to users of the app.
- To keep the service secure and prevent abuse.
To write the article cards, we use outside services (a web search service and an AI language model) that read public company blog posts. None of your information is sent to them.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not share your data with third parties for advertising purposes.
Where your information is stored
Our server runs on Nebius cloud infrastructure in London, United Kingdom. We make backup copies of the server's data for safety, and each backup is deleted after 30 days.
Data retention
- Sign-in sessions stop working 30 days after you last use the app, and expired sessions are deleted from our server whenever someone signs in.
- Email addresses on the approved or waiting list are kept until we remove them.
- Leaderboard entries (your name, the random number for your device, and your verified articles) are kept until you ask us to delete them.
- Backups are deleted after 30 days.
- Information on your phone stays until you delete the app or clear its data.
Delete your Excerp account
To delete your Excerp data from our server, email doer@excerp.app from the email address you use to sign in to Excerp, with the subject "Delete my Excerp account". In the email, please include the name you use on the leaderboard, so we can find your leaderboard entries. If your name is "Reader" (the default), please also include the title of one article you verified and roughly when, so we can find the right entry.
We will delete your data and confirm by email within 30 days. When we delete your account, we remove:
- your email address and your sign-in sessions;
- your place on the approved or waiting list, if you are on it;
- your leaderboard entries: your name, the random number for your device, and your verified-article records.
What this does not remove:
- Information stored only on your phone (your profile, reading list, saved and skipped articles, quiz progress and Verified badges). Delete the app or clear its data to remove it.
- Copies in our backups. These are deleted automatically within 30 days.
Third-party services
- Google: Excerp uses Google Sign-In for authentication, and Google Play provides the app to you and may give us aggregated statistics about installs and crashes. Google's own privacy policy applies to its services.
- Nebius: hosts our server, as described above.
- Cloudflare: provides our domain name, hosts this page, and forwards emails sent to us.
- Article websites: when you open an article's original page, it opens the publisher's website, and the publisher's own privacy policy applies.
Children's privacy
Excerp is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date.
